THANK YOU  THANK YOU  THANK YOU  THANK YOU

We have received a number of generous donations to Malibu which have been beneficial to our grounds and the continuing success of the horticulture program.  Anzac SPO arranged for Malibu to receive a Sea Container to enable Horticulture supplies to be stored safely and securely. They negotiated with Sea Containers WA who supplied and delivered the container.

Our second donation came from Willow Realty who came to our aid when we suffered a number of vandalism attacks over the Summer Holiday’s.  They visited Malibu to see the damage that had been carried out to the Horticulture gardens and presented us with a Bunnings voucher to enable us to buy replacement items.

A really warm thank you to those Staff, Parents, friends and families who gave up their free time to help us attend to the grounds following the destruction.  It was great to see the group joining together to make a true difference to Malibu.

Music Count Us In 2013

On Thursday October 31st, the staff and students took part in Australia’s largest music initiative. With support from The Australian Government, it has run since 2007 and is all about celebrating the value and importance of music in the education and development of all students, whoever they are, wherever they are. It involves more than 600,000 students, teachers and staff from schools all over Australia who sign up to learn, rehearse, and then perform the same song, on the same day, at the same time.

The MAC was filled with witches, vampires and monsters who all helped with the countdown then at 9.30am the air was filled with the fabulous sounds of everyone singing. It was an absolutely fabulous event with everyone looking forward to participating next year.   Well Done Everyone!!!!

Abilities Expo 2013

Noelene has been very busy leading a team, coordinating and arranging the Abilities Expo for the past year along with Lisa Duckett, School Officer here at Malibu School.  Their hard work has been rewarded with the Expo proving to be an overwhelming success.  This is fabulous news for the School and other organizations who promote the work surrounding disabilities and the opportunities available for the future.

The following review has been published by the Department of Education and is a fabulous testament to Noelene, the team and everyone who was involved in the event.

Well done everyone!

Abilities Careers Expo shows students pathways to the future -  23 September 2013

The 10th annual Abilities Careers Expo was held at Crown Burswood last week, with over 600 people visiting the exhibition.

The expo was a cross-sector education and inter-agency initiative which provided students, teachers and families with information about employment, further education, and post-school options available to young people with disability.
Keynote speaker Katie O’Donnell, who graduated from Mirrabooka Senior High School in 1999, shared her inspiring story with the audience before taking to the stage with the Variety Youth Choir.
Visitors were encouraged to attend the Careers Stories workshops to listen to past and present students recount their experiences from the workforce.
Connar Olsen, a student at Cyril Jackson Senior Campus Education Support Centre, spoke to visitors about the transition from secondary school to the workplace.
His principal Paul Jones said Connar completed several workplace learning placements during school, including at the Salvation Army store in Morley, Men of the Trees Nursery in Hazelmere, Foodbank in Welshpool, and K-Mart in Mirrabooka.
“Through these placements, Connar received many awards for demonstrating excellence in key areas such as attitude, presentation, reliability, initiative, social skills, independent travel and an awareness of safety procedures in the work place,” Paul said.
Connar was also a high achiever at school, and had completed a number of certificate courses.
“After his graduation in December this year, Connar hopes to complete Information Technology courses at TAFE or through the Cyril Jackson Senior Campus, which will help him gain future employment,” Paul said.
Malibu School graduate Brandon Mai also shared his story, from work experience with the school gardener, to working at the Bike Dismantle Program in Kwinana.
Principal Noelene Mason, who was also the Abilities Careers Expo chair, said Brandon had learnt to trust himself and had gained a sense of purpose since entering the workforce.
“Brandon had many challenges to overcome, but he was able to learn the resilience needed to go through gaining employment, and was supported in a very individual manner,” she said.
Brandon now works part-time at ACTIV Rockingham as part of their Property Care team, and continues to work with his support worker on his literacy and numeracy skills on his days off.
Noelene said Brandon took the opportunity to thank the staff at Malibu School when he visited the school in the lead up to the expo.
“Both Connar and Brandon were extremely proud of themselves after they spoke, as it allowed them to celebrate their success and to show other young people what is possible.”
Noelene said the expo was a resounding success, and that she was looking forward to attending future exhibitions.
“It truly was a celebration of abilities and success,” she said.
“We know that people feel more informed after leaving the expo - over the years there have been a number of young people who have secured options beyond school as a result of attending.
“It is an amazing feeling when you see young people become proud of themselves, as it mirrors how staff feel about their journey.”

Thank You

SCHOOLS ALIVE CHOIR- ROCKS MANDURAH!!

Malibu students Corey Powley, Bryce Taylor and Hanna Staples have once again represented Malibu and did us proud performing alongside their peers with Schools Alive Choir at the annual WAGSMS held at the Mandurah Performing Arts Centre on Friday 9th August.

WAGSMS (Western Australia Government Schools Music Society) are held annually in which school choirs perform alongside each other to a sell out audience of over 500 friends and families and receive a trophy for participating.

With the bright lights and a full house to contest with it was fantastic to see the guys take it in their stride and sing their hearts out in a medley of songs that they have been rehearsing every Wednesday with their Schools Alive Choir peers. Along with some awesome "shuffling" they impressed the audiences with performing first for the evening and set the bar for other school choirs to follow suit.

Congratulations Corey, Bryce and Hanna for an excellent performance.

Watch this space as they get set to perform again later in the semester at the Rockingham Festival!!

A big thank you to Kath Hunter & Sam Taylor (Choir Coordinators) for all their contributing hard work and organization.

Book Week

On Wednesday 21st August we celebrated Book Week.  As a School we have embraced a whole School approach to Literacy using the 'Four Blocks Literacy' program.  The 'Four Blocks' is a research based approach that is broken into four blocks of teaching and learning - guided reading, writing, self selected reading and working with words.  Students have the opportunity to develop in these blocks every day.

Book Week was a great way to celebrate all the work that has been happening with books over the past year. Staff and student were asked to come to school dressed up as their favorite character. There were some fantastic costumes by staff and students. Notable staff mentions to Sue Hoffman who was dressed up as Princess Fiona (green body paint and all), Julie for protecting the school as Constable Julie and Leonie for keeping everyone happy as Minnie Mouse.

Thank you to all who put in the effort to make Book Week a successful day. Keep reading!!

On Monday 5th August, The students from Primary 1, Primary 4, Primary 5, Middle 1 and Middle 4 attended the annual Circus Quirkus event in the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre. Entry to the show was free thanks to the local sponsors of the P.C.Y.C.

Our students enjoyed an array of circus acts that included Clowns, Acrobats, Jugglers, Trapeze artists, Tight-wire and hula hoop performers to name a few.

The room was filled with laughter, clapping and gasps from time to time from the surprised audience who were thoroughly entertained and engaged throughout.  The finale didn’t disappoint with a tremendous laser show that had everyone amazed.

Everyone agreed that it was a fantastic show and a great experience for both Staff and Students. We look forward to attending again next year.
